There are days when you want to do something creative with yarn, and there are days when the thought of counting stitches, checking gauge or weaving in ends sounds like entirely too much commitment.
Heads up: This post may include affiliate links. If you click and buy, I may earn a small commission. It helps keep the yarn stash stashworthy.

This is for the second kind of day. 😂
I made this free yarn mandala colouring page for knitters, crocheters and anyone else whose idea of a good time involves an unreasonable amount of yarn. It combines the circular patterns of a traditional mandala with yarn balls, knitting needles, hearts, loops and knit-inspired details.
And unlike most yarn projects, you can actually finish this one in an afternoon.
A Mandala Colouring Page Made for Yarn Lovers
There are plenty of free mandala colouring pages out there, but naturally, I thought ours needed yarn.
The design starts with a large ball of yarn in the centre and builds outward with repeating yarn balls, knitting needles, braided details, hearts and geometric patterns. There are larger areas if you like simple colouring and plenty of intricate patterns if you are the person who insists on colouring every tiny section a different colour. Yeah, you know who you are 😉
The circular design is surrounded by more yarn and knit-inspired patterns to fill the rectangular page, so there is plenty to colour without leaving huge empty spaces around the mandala.
What You’ll Get
The free printable is one 8.5″ × 11″ yarn mandala colouring page in PDF format, so you can download it and print it at home on regular printer paper.
There is no complicated assembly, cutting or preparation involved. Print the page, find something that makes colour and begin.
Pencil crayons are an obvious choice because they make it easy to work with the smaller details, but markers, crayons or gel pens will work too. You can use a carefully planned colour palette if that brings you joy, or grab whatever colours happen to be closest to you.
We don’t really follow knitting rules here, so why would we make up colouring rules?
A Different Kind of Yarn Project
One of the things I love about knitting is having something to do with my hands. Sometimes, though, I don’t particularly want to start another project. Sometimes, there’s a hangover from the last project, but still a need to decompress a little.
A colouring page scratches a little bit of that same creative itch without creating another work-in-progress.
There are no rows to repeat, no dropped stitches to rescue and no pattern to keep track of. You can colour the whole mandala at once, work on a little bit at a time, or abandon it halfway through without finding it six months later attached to a set of knitting needles you now need for something else.
That last one may be a particularly useful feature.
The repeating circular patterns also make it fun to experiment with different colours. Make every yarn ball different, choose one colour scheme for the entire mandala, or colour the yarn balls to look like some of your favourite yarn.

Print One for Your Next Quiet Afternoon
This yarn mandala colouring page is an easy little activity for a rainy afternoon, a quiet evening or those rare moments when you have time to sit down but don’t particularly feel like doing anything productive.
It could also be a fun addition to a knitting group get-together. Rather than printing copies for everyone yourself, send your fellow yarn lovers here to download their own free printable colouring page. That helps more knitters discover KnitWits Club — and gives them access to whatever other yarn-related nonsense we’ve been up to around here.
Once you’ve finished colouring it, you can pin your mandala in your craft room, tuck it into a knitting journal or put it directly into the recycling bin.
It’s a colouring page. We are not making major life decisions here. 😂
Download Your Free Yarn Mandala Colouring Page
Ready to colour some yarn instead of knitting with it?
You can download the free yarn mandala colouring page from the KnitWits Club shop. Add it to your cart for $0, complete the checkout and your printable PDF will be ready for you.
Print it on standard 8.5″ × 11″ paper and colour it however you like.
The printable is free for personal use. If another knitter wants a copy, please share the link with them rather than sharing the PDF itself so they can come discover the awesomeness too.
Happy colouring! 🧶
